Stitched Textile Studio is the working studio of Marion Matthews
Marion is a textile artist living in Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia.
She works predominately with fabrics that she has sourced whilst traveling. Some old, some new, some hand printed, some hand dyed. They could be cotton, linen, silk or wool. Some of the fabric is designed for clothing, some for decoration and some for the traditional patchwork market. They carry symbols that are distinctive to their origin, but when they are combined and stitched beside one another, they create a unity and one voice. From these beautiful fabrics she creates unique and colourful quilts, throws and a variety of smaller stitched items. Working with very simple piecing and gorgeous fabrics her work explores the theme of fabric as a single language. Exemplifying the notion that textiles move beyond the artificial borders that are imposed on communities and that fabric design although distinctive and symbolic, talks a common language that we all understand. |
The quilts are hand constructed using the traditional processes patchwork construction. They represent our Australian community: one that is diverse, carries symbols of various cultures and beats to the same drum!
Her other passion is hand dyeing with eucalyptus leaves and integrating other dyeing processes which combine to produce stunning effects on silk scarves, woollen socks and a range of garments. What distinguishes Marion’s work is the use of colours, tones and strength of designs. Marion's studio is OPEN when the flag is out – most weekends or by appointment: here : 0428825971 : 43 Regent St, Port Fairy. VIC 3284 |
